Welcome to Shelter of Hope

Providing emergency and transitional shelter to individuals and families for over 30 years

About Us

Who we are...

Founded in 1988, the Shelter of Hope is  a community-based organization focused on helping individuals & families move from homelessness to a permanent residence.  Shelter of Hope provides  temporary emergency and transitional housing and services to persons who are homeless or who are at risk of becoming homeless in the Boyd, Greenup and Lawrence County areas.  We offer transitional services such as, security/utility deposits, individual case management, and other assistance in their path towards self-sufficiency and permanent housing. Provisions are made without discrimination regardless of age, race, color, creed, religion, sex, handicap, national origin, familial status, marital status, sexual orientation or gender identity.

What we do...

The Shelter of Hope provides the following services/programs for families, individuals and veterans who are homeless or at risk of being homeless:

  1. Temporary Emergency Housing - 10 fully furnished 1 & 2 bedroom apartments (one handicapped and one dedicated for veterans). In-house residents receive assistance from our pantry with food, household furnishings, personal hygiene items and cleaning supplies.
  2. HOME TBRA for Boyd & Greenup Counties - "Tenant-based Rental Assistance" is a program that supplements a household's rent (up to a maximum of 2 years) until a Housing Choice Voucher, through HUD, is approved.
  3. "Reapid Re-Housing" - offers eligible homeless individuals and families assistance to locate housing, securities/utility deposit assistance, and rent assistance with support through ongoing case management.
  4. "Prevention" program - assists " At-Risk" individuals with casework, housing referrals, deposits, rent assistance as needed.
  5. Hope Self-Help Housing Program - a Continuum of Care Permanent Supportive Housing program providing housing for homeless, disabled veterans, or chronically homeless individuals and families.

The Shelter of Hope continues to expand its' services through housing initiatives, financial literacy, case management, and collaboration with programs such as AmeriCorps, VISTA, United Way, CAReS, Community Kitchen, River Cities Harvest, Salvation Army, Pathways, Veterans' Affairs, City of Ashland, Safe Harbor, Ashland Area Ministerial Association and many local churches. We also have a working relationship with Kentucky Housing Corporation and the Homeless and Housing Coalition of Kentucky.

Shelter of Hope continues to increase services in order to meet the rising demand for affordable low-income housing, as well as to improve community involvement and support through homelessness awareness education.
